Estimates daily parrot care time in minutes from weight.

Daily parrot care time by weight

Parrots take a lot of your day: minutes β‰ˆ 30 + weight_g Γ— 0.15. That number covers pellet and fresh food (10 min), a water bowl change (3 min), and a quick cage spot-clean (5 min). Then comes the part people underestimate β€” 60 to 120 minutes out of the cage every day, because these are flock animals and the time isn't optional. Add a daily bath or spray, another 3 min.

The Brazilian native Amazona aestiva (papagaio-verdadeiro) is protected by IBAMA, so a legal bird has to come from a registered SISPASS breeder. Expect it to live 40 to 60 years. The African Grey (Psittacus erithacus) sits on CITES Appendix I. Never buy from traffickers; under Lei 9.605/1998 (Crime Ambiental) that's a crime, and trafficking remains the single biggest threat to Brazil's psittacid populations.

Applications

Responsible psittaciculture, IBAMA Renctas wildlife-trafficking awareness, school biology programs, exotic-animal vet work (medicina de exΓ³ticos), and urban CTAS centers (Centro de Triagem).

FAQ

Will my parrot talk? Most psittacids can mimic sounds. African Greys and Amazons tend to be the strongest, with cockatoos and macaws not far behind. It varies a lot from bird to bird, though, and plenty never say a word.

Feather plucking causes? Usually some mix of boredom, poor nutrition, dry air, too little sunlight, or hormonal cycles. If it starts, get an avian vet to look.

Companion species? Keep them either alone or in a stable bonded pair. Throw different species together and you invite aggression and disease spreading between them.
