Playlist Songs Needed by Duration
Calculates how many songs are needed for a party playlist based on total duration.
โ
Playlist length: how many songs per hour?
Most pop tracks run around 3.5 minutes, which gives you songs โ minutes / 3.5. Figure on roughly 17 songs to fill an hour, and somewhere near 100 songs for a 6-hour party. If you build the playlist in Spotify or Apple Music, the total duration shows up in the header, so you can sanity-check the count against it. Working with shorter material like TikTok edits at 2:30, or longer stuff like extended dance mixes at 6:00? Nudge the average to match.
Applications
DJs and party planners reach for this when they need a wedding or birthday playlist to fit a slot. So do road-trip travelers lining up the music to the hours of driving ahead. And gym goers use it to build high-BPM workout sets for treadmill, spinning or HIIT, where a 45-minute session runs about 13 tracks.
FAQ
Why 3.5 minutes? That's been the median for mainstream pop and rock since the 2000s. Classical, jazz and progressive rock sit higher, closer to 6-10 minutes a piece.
Should I add a buffer? Yes. Pad the list with 10-15% extra songs so you're covered for skips, encores and the requests that always come in late.
What about transitions? A crossfading DJ shaves 5-10 seconds off each track, so the effective duration shrinks. On long sets it's worth recounting.
