Page Estimation for Classic Portuguese Novels
To work out how many pages a Portuguese-language book runs to, you use the same arithmetic as anywhere else: pages = total_words / words_per_page. Trade paperbacks usually pack 250–320 words onto a page. One quirk worth knowing is that Portuguese prose runs a bit longer than English for the same story, because the articles, the gendered agreement and the compound tenses all add words. Figure on roughly 10% more.
The reference points stretch across centuries. Luís de Camões’ epic Os Lusíadas (1572), written in verse over 1,102 octaves, fills roughly 880 pages once you add the annotations. Eça de Queirós’ realist masterpiece Os Maias (1888) gets to about 700 pages; his earlier O Crime do Padre Amaro sits around 460. Camilo Castelo Branco’s romantic Amor de Perdição is far slimmer at 240 pages. And José Saramago’s Nobel-winning Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira (1995) comes in near 350.
Applications
Literature students reach for this when they want to gauge how much reading a book will actually take. Editors use it to plan print runs, translators to forecast the page count of a foreign edition, and bookbinders to work out spine width. It also comes in handy when you’re building an academic syllabus and need to spread Lusophone classics across the weeks of a semester.
FAQ
Why use 300 words per page? That figure lines up with the typical 5×8" trade paperback set at 11pt with 1.2 line spacing, the format most Portuguese publishers like Companhia das Letras and Caminho work with.
Does verse count the same as prose? It doesn’t. Verse fits far fewer words on a page, around 150, because of the line breaks and the space between stanzas. For an epic like Os Lusíadas, dial the words-per-page input down.
Is the count exact? No. Treat it as an estimate. The real layout shifts with the font, the margins, where chapters break and how much front and back matter the edition carries, so expect it to land within about ±10%.
