PSS-10 Perceived Stress Score
Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein built the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) back in 1983. What it captures is how much someone feels their life over the last month has been unpredictable, out of their control, and piled too high. You answer all 10 items on a scale from 0 (never) to 4 (very often). The four positively worded items (4, 5, 7, 8) get flipped: score = 4 − answer.
Totals land somewhere in the 0–40 range. People often use ≥ 14 = high stress as the cut-off, breaking the rest into 0–13 low, 14–26 moderate, and 27–40 severe. Keep in mind what the PSS-10 actually measures: your perception of stress, nothing more. It won't diagnose an anxiety disorder, and it does not stand in for a clinical evaluation.
Applications
Occupational health researchers have leaned on it for years, and lately Brazilian companies rolling out NR-1 (Programa de Gestao de Riscos Psicossociais) are picking it up too — that rule has required workplaces to assess psychosocial risks since 2026. You'll also find it in academic work, clinical follow-up, and public health surveys.
FAQ
Why are some items reversed? Items 4, 5, 7 and 8 are worded the other way around (“felt confident”, “things were going your way”). Flipping them is what keeps the rule consistent: a higher total still means more perceived stress.
Is the PSS-10 validated in Brazil? It is. Reis, Hino & Anez (2010) validated the Brazilian Portuguese version, reporting a Cronbach alpha around 0.83.
High score — what next? Bring it up with your physician or an occupational psychologist, or go through whatever channel your company's NR-1 program offers. Stress that stays high over time is a real risk factor for anxiety, depression and burnout.
