A residential safe keeps documents, jewelry, cash, firearms and external hard drives away from both burglars and fire. As a starting point, the rule safes = max(1, adults ÷ 2) gives you at least one master safe for the home. FAQ

Is a safe fireproof? Only models that carry an explicit UL-72 rating or its equivalent actually resist fire, usually for 30 to 120 minutes at 850°C. A burglary-only safe will let your paper carbonize. Look for the fire rating and the burglary rating listed separately.

Mechanical or digital lock? A mechanical dial or key never fails on a dead battery or an EMP, though it's slower to open. Digital locks with a biometric backup open faster and let several users keep their own codes, but you'll need to check the batteries every 6 months.

Where should I install it? Keep it out of the bedroom closet, since that's the first place a burglar looks. A laundry room cabinet, a garage wall, or a spot built into masonry under the stairs all work better. Bolt it to concrete or structural steel, and never to drywall.
