Residential Safes per Household

A residential safe keeps documents, jewelry, cash, firearms and external hard drives away from both burglars and fire. As a starting point, the rule safes = max(1, adults ÷ 2) gives you at least one master safe for the home. Beyond that, you might add an individual unit for each adult who keeps personal valuables on hand, like a watch, a passport or work papers.

In Brazil, safes are graded under the SBC (Sistema Brasileiro de Cofres) classification. A B-rated safe holds out for about 30 minutes against a manual attack with drills, crowbars and hammers; a C-rated unit takes roughly 60 minutes, basic power tools included. Capacity runs from 5L, enough for jewelry, documents and USB drives, all the way to 30L for laptops, full document folders and small firearms. Don't skip the fixation step. Bolt the safe to a structural wall or floor using chemical anchors, because a free-standing one under 50kg can be hauled off in under 10 minutes.

Applications

People reach for a safe to hold physical documents (RG, passport, property deeds), an emergency cash reserve, jewelry and watches, registered firearms (which CR holders are required to store this way under Exército regulations), backup drives carrying sensitive data, and items passed down through inheritance. Among the Brazilian brands worth trusting are Mercúrio for traditional mechanical models, Bionix for biometric and digital ones, and Safewell, with sizes that span compact hotel-style 5L units up to floor safes embedded in masonry.

FAQ

Is a safe fireproof? Only models that carry an explicit UL-72 rating or its equivalent actually resist fire, usually for 30 to 120 minutes at 850°C. A burglary-only safe will let your paper carbonize. Look for the fire rating and the burglary rating listed separately.

Mechanical or digital lock? A mechanical dial or key never fails on a dead battery or an EMP, though it's slower to open. Digital locks with a biometric backup open faster and let several users keep their own codes, but you'll need to check the batteries every 6 months.

Where should I install it? Keep it out of the bedroom closet, since that's the first place a burglar looks. A laundry room cabinet, a garage wall, or a spot built into masonry under the stairs all work better. Bolt it to concrete or structural steel, and never to drywall.
