Residential emergency lighting sizing

A workable rule for a home is one luminaire for every 25 m² of circulation area, with extra units placed at each stairway landing, hallway and exit: N = ceil(area / 25). You're not trying to light up the rooms here. The point is to keep the escape route visible through a blackout, long enough for everyone to get out safely.

Under ABNT NBR 10898 (Sistema de iluminação de emergência), emergency lighting is mandatory in commercial, industrial and multi-family residential buildings. Single-family homes are a different story: it's recommended there, not required. Where it applies, the standard sets a floor of 5 lux at floor level along circulation paths and a minimum autonomy of 1 hour, though most modern LED units run 3–4 h on a rechargeable lithium or NiMH battery. After the mains drop, switch-over has to happen in under 5 s.

Applications

Electricians, building managers and homeowners reach for this during a renovation or when wiring a place from scratch. For low-voltage projects sent to fire departments (CBMSP, CBMERJ), it's mandatory in condominiums taller than 12 m or with more than two stories. In Brazil the names you'll see most are Intelbras, Tramontina, Segurimax and Lumen.

FAQ

Where do I install them? Put one above each door that opens onto an escape route, on stairway landings, along long corridors at roughly every 15 m, and wherever the path changes direction. Mount them between 2.0 and 2.5 m off the floor so the beam actually lands on the walking surface.

LED, fluorescent or incandescent? In practice LED is the only sensible pick now. It draws less power (3–5 W), holds out longer on battery and lasts 30 000+ hours. NBR 10898 doesn't dictate the lamp technology anymore; it only cares about the photometric output.

How often should I test? Once a month, hit the TEST button to make sure it switches over. Once a year, run it down fully to check the 1 hour autonomy still holds. Plan on swapping the battery every 3–4 years or so.
