The random verse: a tiny machine for inspiration
A verse is a single line — or a tightly bound group of lines — of poetry, scripture or lyric. Long before push notifications and motivational apps, monks pulled sortes biblicae at random to find a passage for the day, and 19th-century parlour decks contained Shakespeare quotations shuffled like tarot. A random-verse generator is the same ritual in JavaScript: one click, one line, one prompt for the mind.
Verses are useful precisely because they are short. They fit on a greeting card, an Instagram square, a calligraphy practice sheet, the top of a journaling page or the bottom of an email signature. They invite memorisation in a way a full chapter cannot.
Poetic forms behind a single verse
- Sonnet — 14 lines, often
ABAB CDCD EFEF GG(Shakespearean) orABBA ABBA CDE CDE(Petrarchan) - Haiku — 5-7-5 syllables, a single image rooted in the natural world
- Tanka — 5-7-5-7-7, the haiku's older Japanese cousin
- Ode, ballad, free verse — longer forms whose individual lines often stand alone
Behind those forms sit smaller building blocks: rhyme schemes (AABB, ABAB, ABBA), metre (iambic pentameter, trochaic), alliteration ("she sells sea shells") and assonance ("the rain in Spain"). A great single verse usually borrows at least one of these devices to stay in the ear.
Famous verses that travel well
Robert Frost's "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood" (The Road Not Taken) and Maya Angelou's "Still I rise" (Still I Rise) survive outside their poems because each verse contains a complete image plus a future. The Brazilian canon offers Carlos Drummond de Andrade ("Tinha uma pedra no meio do caminho"), Cecília Meireles, Manuel Bandeira, Vinicius de Moraes and Adélia Prado. The contemporary slam poetry scene — Slam Resistência in São Paulo, Button Poetry online — keeps verse alive as spoken word.
Random vs curated, AI vs human
Classic generators used Markov chains trained on a corpus to chain plausible words. Modern LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) compose original verse on demand, often surprisingly competent on form but flat on metaphor. A curated generator picks from a vetted list and trades surprise for quality; a random AI generator trades quality for endless novelty. The honest middle: use AI as a draft, then revise by hand.
Where a random verse shines
- Greeting cards and condolence notes
- Calligraphy and hand-lettering practice
- Instagram and Threads posts (Rupi Kaur popularised short visual verse in 2014)
- Daily journaling prompts and morning pages
- Songwriting — Bossa Nova standards by Vinicius + Tom Jobim are verse-driven
- Sertanejo lyrics — the traditional 6-syllable line (redondilha maior) shapes the entire genre
FAQ
Is it okay to use AI for verse? Yes, as a draft. Treat the model output as a sketch — keep the image, rewrite the rhythm and replace any cliché. Cite when publishing if the verse stays mostly machine-written.
Does a verse have to rhyme? No. Free verse and most contemporary slam poems skip rhyme deliberately. Rhythm and imagery matter more than rhyme.
What about cultural appropriation? Borrowing forms (haiku, ghazal) is fine; lifting sacred phrases or community-specific language without context is not. Credit the tradition.
Can I monetise verses I generate here? The mechanism is yours, but if the verse comes from a copyrighted poem displayed in the curated list, follow the source's licence. Public-domain authors (pre-1928 in the U.S., 70 years post-mortem in the EU/Brazil) are safe.
