RPG Character Generator
Random RPG character: name, class, race, attributes (simplified DnD 5e).
RPG character generation: from Gygax to modern tabletop
RPG stands for Role-Playing Game — a hobby officially born in 1974 when Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson published the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Before D&D, players ran wargames such as Chainmail, where each token represented a unit of soldiers. Arneson's innovation was to zoom in until a single token represented one persistent hero, with a name, a backstory and choices that mattered between sessions. From that pivot grew an entire industry: TSR, Wizards of the Coast, White Wolf, Chaosium, Paizo, Evil Hat and dozens of indie publishers.
A randomly rolled character is the fastest way to start a session. Our generator picks a class, race, background, alignment and a stat array so the GM can sit down at the table within minutes. The default scheme follows D&D 5th edition conventions, the most widely played ruleset thanks to streaming shows such as Critical Role and Dimension 20.
The six classic attributes
Every D&D-lineage character is described by six ability scores: Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON), Intelligence (INT), Wisdom (WIS) and Charisma (CHA). Scores normally range from 3 to 18 at creation and from 1 to 30 in play. Three methods dominate the table: 4d6 drop-lowest rolls four six-sided dice per stat and discards the smallest (cinematic and swingy); point-buy spends 27 points from a flat scale (balanced, tournament-safe); the standard array assigns the fixed values 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 (fast and predictable).
Classes, races, backgrounds and alignment
The 5e Player's Handbook ships with thirteen classes — Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard and the more recent Artificer — and core races such as Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Dragonborn and Tiefling. Backgrounds (Acolyte, Criminal, Sage, Soldier, Noble, Folk Hero, Entertainer, Outlander, Sailor, Urchin and others) inject roleplay hooks and skill proficiencies. The nine-grid alignment — LG, NG, CG, LN, TN, CN, LE, NE, CE — was reduced to optional flavour in the 2024 edition, but it still helps players summarise a moral compass in one breath.
Beyond Dungeons & Dragons
D&D is the household name, but the hobby is genuinely diverse. GURPS (Steve Jackson Games) is a universal point-buy system that fits any genre. Pathfinder (Paizo) is a D&D 3.5 fork with denser tactical rules. Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium) uses the BRP engine to deliver investigative horror where sanity matters more than hit points. Vampire: the Masquerade and the wider World of Darkness emphasise personal horror and political intrigue. Fate and the Powered by the Apocalypse family (Apocalypse World, Monster of the Week, Masks) push narrative authority back to the table. In Brazil, Tormenta (Akademia, 1999), 3D&T and Old Dragon built a homegrown community with national settings.
FAQ
Are the stats balanced for tournament play? Random rolls are not — that is the whole point of 4d6 drop lowest. If you need parity between players, switch to point-buy or the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) and use the generator only for class, race and background flavour.
Can I target a different ruleset? The output is intentionally generic D&D-flavoured, but the labels translate well to Pathfinder 2e, Old Dragon and Tormenta. For Call of Cthulhu, GURPS or PbtA you usually need bespoke generators because the attributes differ.
Does it work as a seed for AI Dungeon, NovelAI or other LLM RPGs? Yes. Paste the JSON-style output into the prompt and the model uses it as a character sheet. It also pairs well with fiction outlines and NaNoWriMo drafts.
What about NPCs? The same generator works for shopkeepers, guards or guildmasters — just ignore the class slot if the NPC is non-combatant and reuse the background field as profession.
