Application markup with category and operating system

The SoftwareApplication type describes a program: name, category, operating system and, where they exist, price and ratings. It is the markup used by application, extension and tool pages — and it is what lets a search engine show the rating, the price range and the platform right in the result.

Fill in the fields and the page assembles the JSON-LD block with values properly serialised. The category accepts the values foreseen in the specification, such as business, developer, game or utility application; the operating system is free text, and the convention is listing the supported platforms separated by commas.

Two things demand care. If you declare ratings, they must be real and visible on the page itself — marking up a rating the visitor cannot find is an explicit guidelines violation and grounds for manual action. And for a free application, the correct move is declaring the offer with a price of zero and the currency, not omitting the offer: omitting it merely means no information, whereas zero means it is free.

Can I make up the ratings?
No, and this is one of the cases where the punishment is concrete. The guidelines require the marked-up rating to correspond to genuine reviews displayed on the page. Marking up non-existent or invisible ratings earns a manual action and the loss of rich results for the whole site.
Which category should I choose?
The one closest to the main use, from the specification's values. If none fits well, the field accepts free text — but the foreseen values are better understood. Mobile applications have more specific derived types, worth using where they apply.
Do I need an offer for a free application?
Yes, with a price of zero and the currency filled in. Omitting the offer does not communicate that it is free — it communicates absence of information, and the price rich result simply does not appear. Declaring zero is what makes the free label show up.
