Shielding Gas Consumption

Shielding gas consumption

In MIG/MAG and TIG welding, a stream of gas wraps the arc and the weld pool to shield them from the surrounding atmosphere — oxygen and nitrogen from the air would contaminate the molten metal, bringing on porosity, embrittlement and loss of properties. Consumption is simply the flow rate (L/min) × the welding time. Picking the flow rate is a balancing act: too little lets air reach the pool (pores); too much not only wastes gas (an expensive item, argon above all) but creates turbulence, drawing air into the shielded region — the opposite of the intended effect. Knowing the consumption lets you size how many cylinders to take to a job site and budget the gas, which is a significant cost in arc welding.
