Shipping cost: weight, volume and modality

Shipping in Brazil is priced from the larger of actual weight and dimensional (cubic) weight: cubic weight = length · width · height (m³) · cubing factor, where the standard cubing factor is 167 kg/m³ for air and 300 kg/m³ for road. Variables that affect the final price: actual weight, dimensions, origin and destination ZIP (CEP), modality, declared value (insurance), ICMS (state VAT), and the Minimum Freight Floor set by ANTT (Lei do Frete, Law 13.703/2018) for road transport. A simple model is price = (R$/kg/km · billable_weight · distance) + fixed_fee. Example: a 2 kg parcel travelling 100 km at R$ 0.05/kg/km plus R$ 15 fixed fee costs R$ 0.05·2·100 + 15 = R$ 25. Correios services: PAC (cheap, 5–10 business days), SEDEX (1–3 days), SEDEX 10/12 (delivery by 10 a.m./noon next day).

Used in e-commerce checkout (integrators like Melhor Envio, Frenet, Kangu and Intelipost quote multiple carriers in real time), marketplaces (Mercado Envios on Mercado Livre, Magalu Entregas, Shopee Xpress, Amazon Logistics, Shein), logistic planning (deciding between Correios, Loggi, Total Express, Sequoia, Jadlog or Braspress), and by MEIs and SMBs to price products with shipping included or "free shipping" thresholds. For trucking quotes, also consider tolls, ad valorem insurance (≈ 0.1–0.3% of cargo value), GRIS (cargo risk management fee) and ICMS interstate rates.

FAQ

Why is my light parcel charged as if it were heavy? Because of dimensional weight: a large but light box (pillows, foam) takes up cargo space, so carriers bill the cubic weight when it exceeds the actual one.

What's the difference between PAC and SEDEX? Both are Correios services. PAC is economy (5–10 business days, cheaper); SEDEX is express (1–3 days, more expensive). SEDEX 10/12 guarantees delivery by 10 a.m./noon the next business day in covered cities.

Is the calculator's price the final shipping cost? No — real quotes also depend on the carrier's table, insurance, ICMS, fuel surcharge and packaging. Use it as an estimate; for production, integrate the carrier's API.

What's the Minimum Freight Floor (Lei do Frete)? Law 13.703/2018 sets a minimum price per km for road freight in Brazil, defined by ANTT and updated periodically by axle count and cargo type. Below the floor, contracts can be challenged in court.
