Estimating Fabric for a Pair of Shorts

Give this calculator two numbers, the short’s length and the waist circumference, and it estimates how much fabric you need to sew a pair of shorts. The formula behind it is fabric (cm) = ceil(length × 2.4 + waist × 0.2). That factor of 2.4 on the length covers cutting both legs as front and back panels and leaves room for the hem and waistband fold; the waist term tacks on cloth in proportion to body width, for the seat and the rise.

What you get back is one linear measurement in centimetres, on the assumption of standard apparel fabric roughly 140–150 cm wide. Round it up, then leave yourself a margin for the hems, the fly, pockets and a bit of shrinkage.

Applications

Home sewers and small workshops lean on it to cost out a single pair, and it also helps when you're buying cloth in bulk to run sportswear, beachwear or uniform shorts in one fabric.

FAQ

Does the waist term matter much? It ties the estimate to body size. A larger waist calls for wider panels, which means more fabric even when the length stays the same.

Are pockets included? Only loosely. The round-up margin will absorb simple pockets, but big patch or cargo pockets call for extra fabric.

What fabric width is assumed? Somewhere around 140–150 cm. If you're working with narrow 90 cm fabric, add about 30–50% more length.
