Predicting beer color before brew day
You have a recipe with 4 kg of pilsner malt and a handful of crystal, and you want to know whether it lands golden or amber before the burner is lit. Wrong color does not ruin a beer, but it ruins expectations, and a hefeweizen that pours brown starts off on the wrong foot. Three numbers go in: kilos of malt, average Lovibond and batch volume. The default, 4 kg at 6 °L in 20 L, gives 7.3 SRM.
The math runs in two stages. First MCU: kilos become pounds at 2.205, liters become gallons at 0.264, that is multiplied by Lovibond and divided by volume. Then the Morey equation, SRM equals 1.4922 times MCU raised to 0.6859, which bends the curve because color does not stack linearly. There is a single Lovibond field, so the weighted average across your malt bill is something you work out first.
Weighting example: 4 kg of pilsner at 2 °L plus 0.3 kg of caramunich at 60 °L lands near 6 °L average. Enter finished batch volume rather than boil volume, or the color reads too pale. Past roughly 30 SRM the Morey fit loses grip, and stouts and porters pour darker than the number suggests. For EBC, multiply SRM by 1.97.
