Light-year and look-back time

A light-year is how far light gets in one Julian year through vacuum, which works out to 9.461 × 10¹⁵ m ≈ 9.46 Pm. Because of that, the travel time in years is just the distance in light-years: t = d (ly). Some distances to anchor your intuition. Proxima Centauri sits at 4.24 ly, Sirius at 8.6 ly, Vega at 25 ly, Polaris at 433 ly. The Galactic Centre is roughly 26,000 ly out, Andromeda (M31) around 2.5 × 10⁶ ly, and the CMB marks the edge of the observable universe near 46 × 10⁹ ly. Whatever you look at, you see it as it was when the light left, so a star that blew up 100 ly away stays visible for another century. ESA's Gaia DR3 (2022) mapped 1.8 billion stars using parallax-based distances.

Applications

It shows up in amateur astronomy and planetarium software (Stellarium, SkySafari), in science communication, in picking SETI targets, and in mission planning. Take Breakthrough Starshot: a 4.24 ly hop to Proxima at 20% c runs 20 years one-way, and you wait another 4.24 years for the radio confirmation to come back.

FAQ

Light-year or parsec? Astronomers reach for the parsec (1 pc ≈ 3.26 ly) since it falls straight out of a parallax measurement. The press tends to stick with the light-year, where the look-back time reads itself.

Can we see a star that no longer exists? We can. Betelgeuse is 548 ly out, so if it went supernova today, the flash would not reach Earth until the year 2574.

How are stellar distances measured? Within about 10,000 ly, trigonometric parallax does the job (that is Gaia's territory). Farther out you lean on standard candles instead, such as Cepheid variables and Type Ia supernovae, climbing the cosmic distance ladder rung by rung.
