Finding passive sentences in Portuguese text
Corporate reports drift the same way in Portuguese: foi realizado, foram identificados, é recomendado. Nobody ever shows up doing anything. Editors, teachers and style guides ask for active voice, but hunting those sentences across ten pages is the dull part of the job. This page splits the text into sentences and counts how many match the common analytic passive pattern.
The rule pairs two pieces: an auxiliary from a fixed list (foi, foram, é, são, era, eram, será, serão, seja, sejam, sido) followed immediately by a participle ending in ado, ada, ados, adas, ido, ida, idos or idas. Each sentence counts once at most. Irregular participles therefore slip through: foi feito, foi escrito, foi visto and foi posto go undetected. Accented endings such as foi construída escape as well.
Read the result as a floor, not a total: the real number of passives is always equal to or higher than what you see. The synthetic passive built with the pronoun se (vendem-se casas, fez-se o levantamento) is never counted. False positives run the other way too, since ele é apaixonado or o time é dedicado match the pattern without being passive. Use it as triage before a human edit. Runs in your browser.
