Tiffany engagement ring pricing

What you pay for a Tiffany engagement ring comes down to the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat). The rough math looks like this: price โ‰ˆ base ร— carat^1.8 ร— clarity_factor. Take a 1ct H VS1 round in Tiffany's classic 6-prong solitaire and you're looking at roughly $15,000-$20,000. Step up to 2ct and it's ~$50,000-$70,000; a 3ct stone clears $100,000.

The modern 6-prong "Tiffany Setting" goes back to 1886, when Charles Lewis Tiffany came up with it. More recently, LVMH bought Tiffany & Co. for $15.8B in 2021, still the largest luxury deal on record. That signature "Tiffany Blue" carries its own trademark worldwide; the shade is Pantone PMS 1837, a nod to the company's founding year. And of course "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961, Audrey Hepburn) cemented the whole thing in the public imagination.

Applications

Planning a proposal, checking a GIA certificate, getting a piece appraised for insurance, working out resale value (RealReal, Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels), or valuing an inherited ring.

FAQ

Why is Tiffany more expensive than other jewelers? There's a brand premium of about 20-30%. What you get for it: a GIA report with every diamond, free cleaning and resizing for life, and the blue box everyone recognizes.

Investment-grade? Not really. Most diamonds lose 30-50% the moment you try to resell them. The exceptions are rare colors like pink or blue, or stones with some documented history behind them.

Lab-grown vs natural? Since 2024 Tiffany only sells natural diamonds. Lab-grown stones cost 60-80% less up front, but they tend to hold their value poorly when you go to resell.
