Time zones vs. Brazil
Brazil runs on Brasília Time (UTC-3), which covers São Paulo, Rio, Brasília and most of the country. There are two exceptions. Fernando de Noronha (UTC-2) sits one hour ahead, while Acre and western Amazonas (UTC-5) are two hours behind. Since Brazil dropped Daylight Saving Time at the end of 2019, those offsets don't move during the year. Using São Paulo as the anchor: New York (UTC-5) is 2 hours behind. London (UTC+0) is 3 hours ahead during southern-hemisphere winter and 4 hours ahead in summer, because the UK still runs DST. Tokyo (UTC+9) is 12 hours ahead, and Sydney (UTC+10/+11) works out to 13 or 14 hours ahead. It's worth double-checking DST on the other end, since the US, Europe and Australia all keep changing their clocks.
Applications
Think booking meetings across borders, running follow-the-sun customer support, working remotely for a company abroad, broadcasting live events, mapping out a trip overseas, or keeping a distributed team in sync.
FAQ
Does Brazil still have DST? No, it doesn't. Decree 9.772/2019 put an end to daylight saving time, so the offsets stay put all year.
Why does the gap to Europe change? Europe still runs DST, from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October, so the difference jumps by 1 hour twice a year.
How many time zones does Brazil have? Four official ones. UTC-2 covers Fernando de Noronha, UTC-3 most of the country, UTC-4 Mato Grosso and parts of Amazonas, and UTC-5 Acre.
