Dica

Tipping: formulas and global customs

The formulas are straightforward: tip = bill · percent and, splitting the check, per person = (bill + tip) / n. Example: a R$ 200 bill at 10% gives a R$ 20 tip and R$ 220 total; split between 4 people, R$ 55 each. Conventional percentages vary widely by country: in the United States, tipping has historically been 15–20% at restaurants and has crept up to 20–25% after the pandemic (with growing complaints about "tip creep" — prompts on tablets in coffee shops and takeout). In Brazil, the taxa de serviço of 10% is a suggestion (not mandatory), and Law 13,419/2017 regulates how restaurants must distribute it among employees. Across most of Europe, service is usually included and 5–10% is generous; in Portugal and Italy, rounding up is the norm. In Japan and parts of South Korea and China, tipping is unusual and can be seen as rude.

When to tip: restaurants, bars, delivery and travel

In Brazil, tipping is common at restaurants (10% included on the bill), bars (10%), in delivery (optional via apps like iFood and Uber Eats, which now offer a tip button), with doormen, valets and concierges (a flat amount), and for building staff at year-end. Ride-hailing apps usually include a tip option after the trip. While traveling, check local norms: US expects ~20% in restaurants and US$ 1–2 per drink at bars; UK 10–12.5% (often "service charge optional"); France service is included (service compris); Japan no tip needed.

FAQ

Is the 10% service charge mandatory in Brazil? No — it's a suggestion. You can refuse to pay it, but employees often depend on it. Law 13,419/2017 forces restaurants that do charge it to share at least 80% among staff.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Convention varies; in Brazil, the 10% is calculated on the consumption subtotal before any other fees. In the US it's typically applied before sales tax, though many people simply tip on the final bill.

How should we split the bill? The simplest fair method is to divide the total (with tip) by the number of people. For unequal consumption, sum each person's items and apply the tip proportionally.

Should I tip on delivery? Optional in Brazil; delivery apps offer a tip button that goes directly to the courier. In the US, 15–20% or US$ 3–5 minimum is standard.
