Tropical Fish Aquarium Temperature

Recommended water temperature range for common tropical aquarium species.

Ideal water temperature for tropical fish

Most tropical freshwater fish do well between 24 °C and 28 °C, though every species has its own preference. Tetras (neon, cardinal, ember) like 22–26 °C. Bettas want 24–28 °C, and they turn lethargic once it drops under 22 °C. Discus need 28–30 °C, which is the warmest range among the usual community fish. African cichlids from Lake Malawi and Tanganyika settle around 25–28 °C, while guppies and mollies are happy at 24–28 °C. When the temperature swings more than 2 °C within 24 h, the fish get stressed and their immune system suffers. The safe setup is a quality submersible heater (W ≈ 1× liters in mild climates, 1.5× in cold rooms) plus a second thermometer placed on the far side of the tank. Heater thermostats fail eventually, and that backup is what keeps you from cooking the livestock. When Brazilian summers push past 32 °C, aim a fan at the surface or float a few frozen-water bottles to bring it back down.

Applications

Hobby aquarists setting up community or species-specific tanks, ornamental fish stores like Cobasi and Petz sizing heaters at the counter, breeders nudging temperature up 1–2 °C to trigger spawning, and aquascapers weighing plant requirements (most stems prefer 24–26 °C) against what the fish need.

FAQ

Do I need a heater in Brazil? Yes. Even in tropical states the temperature falls at night, and a short cold front can drag an unheated tank down to 18 °C.

Can different species share a tank? Only when their ranges overlap. Discus and neon get along at 28 °C; goldfish (cold water) and tetras don't.

How fast can I change temperature? Keep it to 1 °C per hour at most while acclimating. Sudden shifts cause shock and ich outbreaks.

What heater wattage? Figure about 1 W per liter in a heated home and 1.5 W in unheated rooms. For tanks over 200 L, split that across two heaters so one failure doesn't leave you cold.
