DETRAN vehicle inspection

Vehicle inspection ("vistoria veicular") is required at DETRAN whenever you transfer ownership, deal with a sinistro de grande monta, move the vehicle to another UF, or, in some states, renew the annual licensing. As a rough guide on cost: SP ≈ R$ 240, RJ ≈ R$ 200, MG ≈ R$ 150, RS ≈ R$ 180. The work is done by an ECV (Empresa Credenciada de Vistoria).

CONTRAN Resolução 466/2013 sets the standard procedure: the inspector verifies the chassis number, the engine number, lights, brakes, tires and emissions. If the CRV comes out with code 7 (sucata), the vehicle can no longer be relicensed. The annual licensing itself (IPVA + DPVAT + DETRAN fee) runs roughly R$ 100-200 and varies from one state to the next.
