Watercolor time estimate by paper size
Next to oil or acrylic, watercolor moves quickly. A typical 30×40 cm sheet wraps up in 2–8 h, and frequently in one sitting. The estimate grows with the sheet area and how many transparent layers you stack: t ≈ A(m²) × layers × 5–15 h/m². Wet-on-wet washes are done in minutes, since the pigment spreads while the paper is still soaked. Dry-on-dry layering is slower — you wait 15–30 min between glazes so the wash underneath sets without lifting.
Your materials change the math. Cotton papers like Arches, Saunders Waterford or Canson Heritage at 300 g/m² soak up water evenly and let you take your time, whereas cellulose blends dry faster and push you to work the brush quickly. Kolinsky sable brushes carry more water than synthetics, which stretches out each stroke. Brazilian watercolor, from Alfredo Volpi's bandeirinhas to Aldemir Martins' gouache hybrids, leans on pure transparent washes laid down over a few hours per piece.
Applications
Use it to plan plein-air outings, urban sketching trips or workshops. A Moleskine 21×13 cm landscape wraps up in 30–90 min; an A2 botanical study at the Real Jardim Botânico do Rio might run 6–10 h. Editorial illustrators working for outlets like Folha de S.Paulo or The New Yorker lean on the estimate when quoting day rates per board.
FAQ
Why is watercolor faster than oil? The binder is gum arabic dissolved in water, so drying happens by evaporation rather than oxidation. A wash sets in minutes, where an oil layer needs days.
Should I stretch the paper first? Under 300 g/m², yes: soak it, tape it down and let it dry. At 300 g/m² or heavier on cotton, stretching is optional, and plenty of artists skip it.
How many layers can watercolor hold? Cotton paper takes 4–6 transparent glazes before it muddies; cellulose handles 2–3. Push past that and the pigments start lifting the layer below and losing their glow.
