Airbnb vs hotel: how to choose
For groups and longer stays, Airbnb usually comes out cheaper. You cook instead of eating out, and one nightly rate gets split across everyone. Hotels tend to win the other case: a solo short trip where the included services matter (breakfast, daily cleaning, 24h reception). Watch the math on Airbnb, though. The total usually carries about 14% in service fees on the nightly rate, plus a one-off cleaning fee. Spread that over a week and it barely registers; over a night or two it stings. Say you book 5 nights at R$ 300/night on Airbnb, add R$ 150 cleaning and 14% fees, and you land at R$ 1,860, or R$ 372/night. A hotel at R$ 400/night with breakfast runs R$ 2,000. Close numbers, but the hotel throws in the amenities.
Applications
A family of four or more tends to save with Airbnb, since everyone fits in one unit and shares the kitchen. Solo business travelers on a quick trip get more from hotels, with their loyalty programs, breakfast and business center. Once you hit 15 or more nights, the monthly discounts almost always tip it back toward Airbnb. Just remember to compare the total cost including fees rather than the nightly rate by itself.
FAQ
Does Airbnb's cleaning fee really matter? On a one or two night stay, absolutely. It can pile 30-50% onto the total. Stretch the booking to 7 nights or more and it shrinks to a small fraction.
Is the hotel breakfast worth it? Figure R$ 30-80 per person per day in equivalent value. A family of four is looking at R$ 120-320/day, which is often enough to swing the whole comparison.
What about safety and cancellation? Hotels tend to give you more flexible cancellation and a service you can count on being the same everywhere. With Airbnb it all comes down to the host, so read the cancellation policy and the reviews before you commit.
