Film Preproduction Time Calculator

Estimates film preproduction time from budget in millions and complexity score from one to five using industry production averages.

Pre-production duration

A Hollywood blockbuster tends to spend 3 to 12 months in pre-production. That stretch covers casting, location scouting, storyboarding, production design, locking the schedule and hiring crew. An independent feature usually squeezes all of that into 1 to 3 months. A rough rule of thumb: figure on about 0.4 months of prep for every USD 1M of budget at complexity 3, then push that number up as the VFX load grows and the number of shooting locations climbs.

Applications

Line producers and production managers reach for it when sizing the prep budget. Funders use it while reviewing ANCINE incentive applications or projects under Lei Rouanet Audiovisual, and studios rely on it to lock release windows.

FAQ

What drives pre-production length? The usual bottlenecks are cast availability, location permits, custom set builds, VFX previs and union schedules.

Can prep run in parallel with development? It often does. Soft prep frequently kicks off while the script is still being polished, though the official prep clock only starts at green-light.

How does ANCINE measure it? In incentive projects, prep is reported as its own budget phase, separate from and ahead of the start of principal photography.
