Brazilian Army Retirement (Reforma do Exército)

Officers and enlisted personnel in the Brazilian Army move into the reserva remunerada (paid reserve) once they hit 35 years of effective service. The math is straightforward: remainingYears = 35 - currentYears. Full retirement, the reforma, comes after the reserve period. For generals there is a hard ceiling, mandatory transfer to inactivity (reforma compulsória) at 70 years of age, which Lei 6.880/1980 (Estatuto dos Militares) sets out.

The pension tracks the integral soldo (full base pay) of the last rank held. To fund the military social security system, each member pays a mandatory 10.5% of soldo every month. EC 103/2019 (the pension reform) pushed up the minimum age for moving to the reserve and added transition rules for active-duty personnel who had already joined before 2019.

Applications

Soldiers, sergeants, lieutenants, captains and senior officers on active duty use it to see how much time is left before they can ask for transfer to the reserve. It also helps with mapping out a post-military career (plenty go on to public service or private consulting) and getting a rough estimate of pension entitlements from career length and rank progression.

Does time at military academy (AMAN) count as service time? Yes. The years spent as a cadet at the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras count toward the 35-year requirement. That is the reason most officers become eligible for the reserve at around 53.

Can a reserve officer be recalled to active duty? Yes. The Estatuto dos Militares allows reserve personnel to be summoned (convocação) during national mobilization, war, or when the service has a specific need for them.

What is the difference between reserva and reforma? The reserva remunerada is the first inactivity status; the member keeps full pay but can still be recalled. The reforma is permanent retirement, and it kicks in after more time in the reserve, on reaching the age limit, or because of disability.
