Brazilian Navy Retirement (Reforma da Marinha)

When Navy personnel reach the reserva remunerada depends on rank. Flag officers (almirantes) get there after 30 years of effective service, while enlisted ranks (praças) need 35 years. Either way the formula is remainingYears = limit - currentYears. For admirals there is also mandatory transfer to inactivity (reforma compulsória) at 70 years of age, set by Lei 6.880/1980 (Estatuto dos Militares).

Sea duty (embarques em navios) and shore postings are handled by the SPM (Serviço Pessoal da Marinha), the body that rotates careers to keep the fleet ready. Every month, personnel put in 10.5% of soldo toward the military social security fund. The pension then pays out at the full base pay of the highest rank a person held.

Applications

Navy officers, marines (Fuzileiros Navais) and enlisted sailors lean on it to plan the move to reserve status. It helps them see how sea-duty rotations shift the retirement date and to weigh post-career paths, whether that means the merchant marine, a port authority job, or civilian maritime consulting.

FAQ

Does time at the Naval Academy (EN) count? Yes. Years at the Escola Naval, and at the Colégio Naval where it applies, are counted as effective service, so reserve eligibility arrives sooner.

Are there bonuses for sea time? There used to be. Navigation time (tempo de mar) once earned extra credit, but recent reforms have standardized how it is counted. What applies now comes down to the specific career track.

Can a Navy reservist work in the private sector? Yes. Reserve personnel can take civilian jobs and stack the pension on top of a private salary, as long as they respect the incompatibility rules that apply during active recall periods.
