Belt sizing from waist measurement

To find your belt size, take your waist circumference and tack on 10 to 15 cm (4-6 inches). That extra length puts the middle hole right on your natural waist when you buckle up. Written out, it's belt = waist + 10 to 15. In Brazil, belts run in even numbers (90, 95, 100, 105...). For women, a rough guide is P = 70 cm waist, M = 80 cm, G = 90 cm. So a 82 cm waist lands you at a belt of 92-97 cm, which you'd round up to size 95. One thing people get wrong: measure the belt from the buckle prong to the middle hole, never end-to-end.

Applications

Sizing tables for fashion e-commerce. Made-to-order leather belts from artisans and seamstresses. The size charts you see at fast-fashion stores (Zara, H&M, Renner, C&A). Uniforms. And the difference between a dress belt and a jeans belt, since jeans belts sit lower, down at the hip.

FAQ

Why is the belt longer than the waist? Most belts have 5 holes. You want the middle one to land on your natural waist, which leaves 2 holes you can cinch tighter and 2 you can loosen. The 10-15 cm margin covers that range, plus the bit of belt that overlaps past the buckle.

Should I measure over clothing? Measure wherever the belt actually goes. That means over the jeans for a casual belt, over the shirt for a dress belt. If your clothes are thick, give yourself another 1-2 cm.

How is the belt size labeled? It depends on the country. Brazil goes by the total belt length in cm (90, 95, 100), while the US uses waist size in inches (32, 34, 36). EU sizing usually matches BR. When in doubt, look at the brand's own chart.
