Blink Rate During Screen Use
At rest, spontaneous blink rate (SBR) sits around 15–20 blinks/min. Put someone in front of a focused screen task and it falls to 5–7 blinks/min, a drop of roughly 60–70%. Every blink spreads the tear film and refreshes the pre-corneal lipid layer, so when you blink less the eye dries out faster, and that is what sets off Digital Eye Strain (also called Computer Vision Syndrome, CVS).
The estimator runs on f ≈ f₀ · (1 − k · c), where f₀ is your baseline rate, c is cognitive load (0–1) and k ≈ 0.7 is the screen suppression coefficient. CVS shows up in 50–90% of regular screen users, typically as a cluster of dry eye, blurred vision, headaches and neck pain.
Applications
It comes up in occupational ergonomics (Brazilian NR-17 requires breaks for sustained visual tasks), when prescribing lubricating eye drops, and in screening for dry eye syndrome (Schirmer < 10 mm or TBUT < 10 s). UX researchers use it to study attention, and it underpins the 20-20-20 rule from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which says every 20 minutes you should look at something 20 feet (~6 m) away for 20 seconds.
FAQ
Why do we blink less while reading on screens? Holding your visual attention steady dampens the brainstem blink generator (nucleus of the facial nerve). On top of that, small fonts and glare make you keep the eyelids open longer just to hold accommodation.
Does the 20-20-20 rule really work? It does. Twenty seconds at 6 m relaxes the ciliary muscle and resets accommodation, and when you pair it with deliberate blinking, clinical trials show CVS symptoms easing in 70–80% of users.
When should I see an ophthalmologist? Get checked if you have persistent burning, a foreign-body sensation, blurred vision after > 2 h of use, or red eyes. That goes double if you wear contact lenses or are over 40, when presbyopia tends to set in.
