Our Lady of Aparecida: Patron Saint and National Holiday

The feast of Nossa Senhora Aparecida lands on October 12 every year. It is a fixed civil date, so there is no astronomical calculation to do. Brazil made the day a national holiday through Law 6.802/1980, though Pope Pius XI had already named her the country's official patron saint back in 1930. October 12 also happens to be Children’s Day, and that overlap has long added to the cultural pull of the holiday.

The devotion traces back to 1717. During a poor fishing season, fishermen on the Paraíba do Sul river pulled up a small headless terracotta statue of the Virgin, and later the head itself. The catch turned abundant after the find. People began venerating the image locally, and over time pilgrims came from across the country. Today the Basilica of Aparecida, in São Paulo state, ranks as the second-largest Catholic church in the world by area. It sees roughly 200,000 visitors on the holiday and more than 12 million a year, all coordinated by the CNBB (Brazilian National Conference of Bishops).

Applications

A lot hinges on this date. The basilica plans its logistics around it, as do the road authorities on the Via Dutra (BR-116) and the hotels and restaurants in Aparecida-SP. Broadcasters schedule coverage of the papal mass, schools build their holiday calendars, and payroll systems apply holiday pay rules under the CLT (Brazilian labor code).

FAQ

Is October 12 always a holiday? Yes. Law 6.802/1980 fixes it as a national civil and religious holiday. If it lands on a weekend, you don't get a compensation day for it.

What is the difference between the basilica and the sanctuary? The Old Basilica, from 1888, holds the original image. The New Basilica, consecrated in 1980, is the much larger pilgrimage church. Taken together, they make up the Santuário Nacional de Aparecida.

Are there other patron-saint feasts on the same day? In several Brazilian cities the Catholic calendar marks Bom Jesus dos Passos on nearby dates. For the exact schedule, check with the local diocese.
