Pentecost — 50 days after Easter

Pentecost is a movable feast that lands exactly Easter + 49 days. In other words, it is the 50th day of the Easter season, which is where the name comes from: the Greek pentêkostê means “fiftieth”. It always falls on a Sunday, somewhere between May 10 and June 13, and exactly when depends on the date of Easter that year. The arithmetic itself is nothing fancy: Pentecost = Easter Sunday + 49 days.

What Christians mark on this day is the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, the scene told in Acts 2:1–4. A sound like a rushing wind filled the house, tongues of fire rested on each of them, and they began to speak in foreign languages so that pilgrims from many nations could follow the gospel. That is why the day is often called the “Birthday of the Church”. In Brazil, the Pentecostal denominations — Assembleia de Deus, Congregação Cristã, Igreja Universal — along with the Catholic Movimento Carismático, mark it with vigils, prayer chains and big open-air gatherings.

Parishes and Pentecostal churches use it to schedule vigils, confirmations and the “Pentecost Novena”. Liturgical publishers need it when they put together their yearly calendars, and HR teams reach for it in countries where Pentecost Monday is a public holiday (Germany, France, parts of Switzerland and Austria). In Brazil it is not a national holiday. Theology students also lean on the date to study the Easter cycle and how the liturgical year is laid out.

Why “50 days” and not 49? The count is inclusive, the way it works in the Jewish tradition. Easter Sunday is day 1, so the 50th day ends up being exactly 49 days later. Both phrasings point to the same Sunday.

What is the colour of Pentecost? Red, for the tongues of fire and the blood of the martyrs. Priests wear red vestments, and churches are usually decorated with red flowers.

How is it related to the Jewish Shavuot? Pentecost falls on Shavuot (the “Feast of Weeks”), the Jewish harvest festival held 50 days after Passover. That overlap is exactly why Jews from so many regions happened to be in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit descended.
