Book pages by format: pages โ‰ˆ total_words รท words_per_page

How many pages you end up with comes down to the physical format, the font size, the leading and how wide your margins are. A few working numbers: an A5 commercial paperback runs about 250 words/page, A4 academic / didactic sits closer to 400, a pocket / mass-market edition holds 150โ€“200, and a hardcover trade book lands near 300. The formula itself is plain: pages = total_words / words_per_page. So an 80,000-word novel turns into roughly 320 pages as a commercial paperback, around 200 in academic A4, or about 500 in pocket size. Push the margins out, bump the font from 10โ€“11 pt up to 12โ€“14 pt, or open the leading from 1.2ร— to 1.5ร—, and your words per page drop accordingly. Ebooks are a different story. ePub has no fixed pages because the reader reflows the text, which is why word count stays the one metric you can rely on for digital editions.

Applications

Publishers use it to plan print runs and work out spine width. It helps compare ePub against print for a hybrid release. On Amazon KDP page count drives the royalty tier and the minimum price, so it matters there too. Writers reach for it when projecting a page budget for a thesis or dissertation, or just setting a goal (NaNoWriMo's 50k works out to about 200 paperback pages).

FAQ

Why does my actual book have fewer/more pages? Front matter (title, copyright, TOC), chapter break pages, illustrations and blank verso pages can easily tack on 10โ€“20 pages. Going the other way, dense typesetting with tight leading squeezes the count back down.

Does Amazon KDP count differently? Yes. KDP runs its own page-count algorithm off the uploaded PDF or manuscript, factoring in trim size and font, so it won't line up with the page count Word shows you. Check KDP's "Page count" report after you upload.

What about ebooks? There's no fixed page in ePub. Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP) gets around this by treating a "page" as roughly 187 words at standard settings, and that's what KDP Select uses to pay out royalties.

How wide should margins be? Give the inner margin (the gutter) at least 2 cm on perfect-bound books over 200 pages, or the text disappears into the spine. For the outer, top and bottom, 1.5โ€“2 cm is the usual call.
