Resume length by years of experience
Here is the rule of thumb most recruiters go by. If you have under 10 years of experience, keep it to 1 page. Once you hit 10 years or more, 2 pages is fair game. C-level executives, PhDs, or senior researchers can run to 3 or more pages. In the US, one page is more or less the law for most professionals; the academic CV (curriculum vitae) is the exception, with no limit, since it lists every publication, talk and grant. Brazil mostly sticks to the 1-2 page rule for the currículo, with the Lattes platform doing the heavy lifting as the unrestricted academic record. Example: a software engineer with 6 years should fit on 1 page, a director with 18 years uses 2, and a tenured professor just publishes the full Lattes export.
Applications
This estimate comes in handy when you export from LinkedIn (Profile → More → Save to PDF tends to run long and needs trimming), upload to Catho or Vagas.com, or push a file through a corporate ATS. One caveat for Brazilian academia: attach the full Lattes CNPq export rather than a trimmed resume. Recruiters at research labs and federal universities are looking for the unlimited format anyway.
FAQ
Can a junior with 2 years use 2 pages? Better not. A recruiter skims your resume in maybe 6-8 seconds, and a packed second page reads as something only a senior person earns. Keep it tight.
Does this rule apply to LinkedIn profiles? No. LinkedIn has no page limit, so the rule only matters for PDF or DOCX submissions.
What if I have 9 years but lots of projects? Put your most recent 5-7 years front and center on page 1, then fold the older roles into a single "Earlier experience" line.
Are 3-page resumes ever accepted outside C-level? Sometimes. Consulting, medicine and law will tolerate it when you need room for certifications, court cases or publications. Most other fields will hold the length against you.
