A complete Brazilian ID record: not just the number

A Brazilian RG (Registro Geral) card carries far more than the visible number. A full plausible fixture mirrors the printed cédula and includes: the registration number (whose format varies by state), the issue date, the issuing body with its UF (SSP/SP, IFP/RJ, IGP/RS, PCDF/DF and so on), the holder's full name, parental filiation (mother and, when present, father), place of birth (naturalidade) and date of birth. This generator returns the whole record at once, so testing systems that read several fields at once (registration UIs, KYC, contract templates) does not need to be stitched together from multiple sources.

State issuing bodies (órgãos emissores)

Unlike the CPF (federal, single format), the RG is a state document: each state issues its own and prints its own acronym. The dominant codes are:

• SSP/UF — Secretaria de Segurança Pública: used by São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Bahia and most states.
• IGP/RS, IGP/SC — Instituto-Geral de Perícias: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina.
• IFP/RJ — Instituto Félix Pacheco: Rio de Janeiro.
• PCDF/DF — Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal: Brasília.
• DETRAN/UF — some states accept the DETRAN-issued driving licence number as a secondary RG equivalent.

The printed cédula is blue, sized roughly 5 x 7 cm, plastified, with a black-and-white photograph on the left and signature on the right.

CIN: the new national identity

Under Decreto 10.977/2022, Brazil started issuing the CIN (Carteira de Identidade Nacional) — a polycarbonate card following ICAO 9303 (the same standard used by passports). The CIN uses the CPF as its sole identifier, ending decades of one-person-multiple-RGs because each state numbered independently. The CIN includes a QR Code that links to a digital twin in the gov.br ecosystem and (within Mercosur and the Andean Community) can substitute for a passport. Legacy RGs without a recent photo remain valid until 2032 by the published transition rules, after which CIN becomes mandatory for new emissions everywhere.

Multiple RGs per person — the historical anomaly

Because issuing was state-level and there was no national uniqueness check, a person who moved across states often ended up with a second or third RG without realising. This was legal but caused fraud, double-voting cases and benefit duplication. The CIN closes the loophole: by anchoring to the CPF (which has been federally unique since 1968), every cardholder has exactly one identity.

Validity and refresh practice

The RG has no legal expiry date. In practice, banks, airports and notaries refuse cards whose photograph is older than ten years, citing identification risk. The new CIN does carry a printed validity: 5 years for under-12s, 10 years for 12–60, and lifelong for 60+. This is closer to international passport norms.

FAQ

Do I need to renew my RG every X years? No legal obligation, but the practical floor is roughly a decade: a 20-year-old photo will be rejected by most KYC counters. Migrating to CIN is recommended whenever your state offers the service.

Can I hold an RG from a state where I do not live? Yes — you can apply in any UF. The historical side-effect was multiple RGs across states; the moment you obtain a CIN, the older RGs are conceptually superseded (same identity, one card).

Does CIN replace my passport abroad? Only within Mercosur (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela) thanks to the residence agreements. For any other destination you still need a passport.

Is the generated record safe to use in tests? The fields follow the printed-cédula format but the numbers, names and filiations are synthetic. They do not match anyone real; using them for fraud is still a crime under Lei 12.737/2012 regardless of statistical novelty.
