Diners Club: the first general-purpose credit card
Diners Club was launched in February 1950 by Frank McNamara, Ralph Schneider and Matty Simmons in New York β the first general-purpose credit card ever issued, accepted at 27 Manhattan restaurants on day one. The famous origin story β McNamara forgetting his wallet at a Major's Cabin Grill dinner and proposing the concept of a multi-merchant card the next day β is largely a marketing embellishment, but the historical milestone is real: before Diners, "credit cards" were closed-loop products tied to a single retailer or oil company. Diners Club was bought by Citibank in 1981, sold to Discover Financial Services in 2008, and today is operated globally as Diners Club International, with cards in most regions accepted on Discover's acquiring rails.
The BIN landscape reflects this layered history. The classic Diners Club Carte Blanche range is 300-305, the Diners Club International range is 36 and 39, the older Diners Club enRoute used 2014 and 2149, plus 38 for some legacy products and 309 as a Discover-aligned range. Card length historically was 14 digits, but most cards issued today carry 16 digits so that they align with the form-field expectations of Visa/Mastercard merchants. The last digit is always a Luhn (mod-10) check digit.
BIN ranges at a glance
- 300-305 β classic Diners Club Carte Blanche issuance (US heritage)
- 36 β Diners Club International, the modern global BIN
- 38 β Diners Club enRoute (legacy, mostly inactive)
- 39 β Diners Club International (secondary)
- 309 β Diners Club / Discover-aligned products in selected markets
Charge card vs credit card: what makes Diners different
Diners Club is historically a charge card, not a credit card. The difference is fundamental: a charge card has no pre-set spending limit and no revolving balance β the entire amount spent in a billing cycle must be paid in full at the closing date. This positioned Diners as a tool for business travel and high-ticket entertainment from the start, and is the same model later adopted by American Express Green. In recent decades many Diners Club issuers also offer revolving credit products, but the premium positioning around travel benefits, airport lounges and concierge service remains.
Diners Club in Brazil
In Brazil the Diners Club brand has been operated by ItaΓΊ since the consolidation of the old Diners Club do Brasil S.A. into the bank's portfolio, with cards historically positioned alongside Itaucard's premium lines. Acceptance at point of sale is provided through the Mastercard / Discover acquiring infrastructure, so a Diners Club card in SΓ£o Paulo today runs on the same terminals that accept Mastercard β even though the front of the card carries the Diners logo.
FAQ
Are Diners Club cards still widely accepted? Globally, less so than Visa or Mastercard but more than the general public assumes β wherever Discover is accepted, Diners Club International is accepted too, including most travel retailers, airlines and hotel chains. Small mom-and-pop merchants outside major cities may still refuse them due to higher interchange.
What is the difference between a charge card and a credit card? A charge card requires the full statement balance to be paid each month and typically has no preset limit; a credit card allows partial payment and accrues interest on the rotating balance. Diners started as the former; today most consumer products mix both models.
Can I use the generated numbers for sandbox testing? Yes β they are Luhn-valid and follow the documented Diners BIN ranges, which is enough for client-side validation, BIN lookup and form-field testing. For end-to-end charge flows, however, always use the test PANs published by your PSP (Stripe, Adyen, Cielo etc.), because real authorisation traffic requires test accounts at the issuer level.
Why do some Diners cards have 14 digits and others 16? Cards minted under the original Diners Club / Carte Blanche specification carried 14 digits. After the Citibank and Discover acquisitions, newer issuance moved to 16 digits to fit the modern PAN field length used by every checkout and POS terminal worldwide.
