Bromeliads per Pot by Light Level
Bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae) are neotropical plants, with roughly 3,500 known species, and Brazil happens to be one of the group's main centers of biodiversity. Most of the ornamental ones you'll run into — Vriesea, Aechmea, Neoregelia, Guzmania — grow as rosettes with a central “tank” that collects water and debris. As a starting point, plant 1 plant per pot of 15–20 cm. Each rosette opens out sideways, so the leaves need room to breathe.
Light is what really drives spacing and species choice. Under low light (1), shade-tolerant Vriesea and Guzmania do well with looser planting. Medium light (2) suits most genera grown in half-shade, while high light (3) is where Aechmea and Neoregelia color up under stronger sun. Use a well-drained substrate based on coconut fiber, sphagnum, pine bark, or a traditional xaxim substitute. To water, fill the central tank and keep the substrate lightly moist.
Applications
Handy for landscapers laying out vertical gardens, hobbyists putting together a balcony collection, nurseries pricing bulk plantings, and interior designers matching species to how bright a room is. The calculator keeps you from overcrowding, which leads to leaf rot and weak flowering.
FAQ
How often do bromeliads flower? Each rosette flowers just once in its life. The inflorescence itself can hold for weeks or even months, and then the mother plant slowly declines and pushes out lateral pups.
What do I do with the pups (filhotes)? Once a pup is about a third of the mother's size, cut it away with a clean knife and pot it on its own. That's how you propagate bromeliads.
Can I use tap water in the central tank? Rainwater or filtered water is better. Chlorinated or hard tap water leaves residues behind and can scorch the leaves of sensitive species like Guzmania.
