Residential Septic Tank Sizing Calculator

The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7229 gives the formula for sizing a residential septic tank: V = N · (C · T + Lf · Tf) + Vr. Here N is the number of users and C is the daily sewage contribution per person, which runs around 150 L/day in a standard home. T is the hydraulic detention time in days (1.0 to 1.5 for households of up to 10 people), Lf the sludge accumulation rate, and Tf the interval between desludgings, usually one year.

Worked example: 5 residents × 150 L/day × 1.5 days lands at about 1,500 L minimum. Whatever the occupancy, the standard never lets you go below 1,250 L. Bear in mind that a septic tank only does primary treatment, the anaerobic digestion of solids. It always has to feed a secondary unit before final disposal: either a filtro anaeróbio or a sumidouro (infiltration well), sized according to ABNT NBR 13969.

Applications

You'll need one in rural areas, condominiums, and any property the municipal sewer network doesn't reach. Size it right and you avoid premature overflow, foul odors, contaminated soil and a polluted water table. Keep the tank at least 1.5 m from foundations, 3 m from property lines, and 15 m from any drinking water well.

FAQ

How often should I pump the tank? Roughly every 12 months if the system is sized properly. Once the sludge climbs past 1/3 of the tank height, call in a licensed vacuum truck without waiting.

Can I send washing machine water to the septic tank? Greywater is allowed, but it adds to the hydraulic load. The standard suggests a separate greywater pit, or bumping the tank up by 30 to 40%.

Pre-cast or built in-place? Pre-cast fiberglass tanks (Fortlev, Acqualimp) go in within a day and come with a guaranteed volume. Masonry tanks built on site cost less, but whether they stay watertight comes down to the quality of the workmanship.
