Minimum bird cage size: the ASPCA welfare rule

According to the ASPCA and avian welfare guidelines, a cage's width must be at least twice the bird's wingspan. That way the bird can open its wings fully without hitting the bars. For most species length counts for more than height, since birds fly across, not up. Some reference minimums: canary 60×40×40 cm, cockatiel 80×60×80 cm, macaw 1.5×1×1.8 m. You also want horizontal bars on at least two sides so the bird can climb. Toys, perches of different diameters and time outside the cage all matter too; the cage by itself is never enough enrichment. Example: a cockatiel with a 30 cm wingspan needs a cage at least 60 cm wide, and 80 cm is the welfare standard. In Brazil, IBAMA bans the capture of wild birds, so only legally bred animals carrying a leg ring are allowed.

It helps the hobby ornithology crowd pick a first cage, helps licensed breeders who have to register with IBAMA's SisPass system and meet enclosure rules, and settles the size question when you move from a starter cage to a flight cage. Can I keep a wild bird I rescued? No. Brazilian law (IBAMA) requires you to hand it over to a CETAS rehabilitation center. Keeping wild birds without authorization is a crime.

Is height or width more important? Width and length, since birds fly horizontally. A tall, narrow cage is worse than a short, wide one.

Do round cages work? No. They're discouraged because they give the bird no corners to shelter in and tend to disorient it.

How long out of the cage daily? Most parrots and cockatiels need at least 1–2 hours of supervised free flight or play.
