Maximum and Minimum Temperatures in Brazil
If you start from monthly mean temperatures, a rough rule of thumb is Tmax ≈ Tmean + 5–8°C and Tmin ≈ Tmean − 5–8°C. How big that offset actually is comes down to continentality, altitude, cloud cover and humidity. Dry interior regions tend to swing much wider, while a humid stretch of coast barely moves away from the mean.
When you need solid historical numbers, look at INMET's BDMEP (Banco de Dados Meteorológicos para Ensino e Pesquisa), which publishes daily extremes for hundreds of stations across Brazil. The hottest reading ever recorded sits around 44.8°C (Bom Jesus, PI), and the coldest hit −17.8°C back in 1952, in Caçador (SC).
Applications
It shows up in agronomy (crop suitability, frost risk, growing-degree days), in civil engineering when you size HVAC or plan thermal expansion joints, in climatology, in public-health alerts during heatwaves, and even in tourism planning.
FAQ
Is this an official forecast? No, it's a back-of-the-envelope estimate built from monthly means. If you need something operational, check INMET, CPTEC/INPE or a certified meteorological service.
Why are coastal cities milder than the interior? Water has a lot of thermal inertia, so the ocean smooths out the swings. Inland and high-altitude places don't have that buffer; they shed heat quickly at night and heat right back up during the day.
Where do the absolute records come from? The official archive is kept by INMET. The figures quoted here are the ones you'll find repeated across INMET bulletins and the scientific literature.
