YMCA body fat: a circumference-only method

The YMCA method estimates body fat percentage from circumference measurements (waist, hip, forearm, neck), and no skinfold caliper is needed. The literature offers several formulas. A simplified version for men relies on waist and weight: %BF = (4.15·waist − 0.082·weight − 98.42)/weight · 100 (waist in inches, weight in pounds). For women the formula changes and brings in hip and forearm. Example: a man with a 90 cm (≈35.4 in) waist weighing 80 kg (≈176 lb) gives (4.15·35.4 − 0.082·176 − 98.42)/176 · 100 ≈ 19.5%. Expect a standard error of roughly ±3-5% against DEXA. That makes it less precise than skinfolds, but a lot easier to run.

Applications: YMCA assessment and fitness

You'll find it in YMCA fitness assessments (the institution that wrote the protocol), in gyms as a first evaluation when there's no caliper around, in weight-loss programs where the scale alone isn't telling the whole story, and in fitness studies comparing circumference against BMI and the waist-hip ratio. Its main practical draw is the kit: a flexible tape and nothing else. No caliper, no scanner, no special training.

FAQ

YMCA or skinfolds? Skinfolds (Jackson-Pollock, Faulkner) land closer to the truth (±2-3%), but you need a caliper and someone trained to use it. YMCA is the rougher option that almost anyone can do.

Does the formula differ by sex? It does. For men, waist carries most of the prediction. For women, hip and forearm are added because fat sits differently on the body.

What is the gold standard? DEXA (dual X-ray absorptiometry) sits at the top, with hydrostatic weighing and BodPod close behind. DEXA is the clinical reference, though the cost and limited access keep it out of reach for many.

How do I measure the waist correctly? Wrap the flexible tape at navel level, keep it parallel to the floor, and read it after a normal breath out. Don't suck in your stomach.
