Spoon to Grams (Fats)

Converts table and tea spoons of oil, butter and margarine to grams and milliliters.

Converting tablespoons of fat to grams

Here are the reference weights per spoon: 1 tablespoon of butter โ‰ˆ 14 g; 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil โ‰ˆ 13 g; 1 tablespoon of olive oil โ‰ˆ 13 g; 1 tablespoon of lard โ‰ˆ 13 g. A teaspoon holds roughly 1/3 of a tablespoon, so 1 tsp of butter โ‰ˆ 4.7 g and 1 tsp of oil โ‰ˆ 4.3 g. One thing that surprises people is that oil weighs less than water at the same volume. Its density is around 0.92 g/mL rather than 1.0, since fat molecules pack together less tightly. Butter, being a touch denser when solid (~0.96 g/mL), comes out a bit heavier per spoon. So if a recipe calls for "3 tablespoons of butter" you get 3 ร— 14 = 42 g, and "2 tablespoons of olive oil" gives 2 ร— 13 = 26 g. The advantage of grams is that there's no more guessing whether the spoon was heaping, level or rounded.

Applications and context

It earns its keep in calorie tracking apps like MyFitnessPal, FatSecret or Cronometer. With 1 g of fat at 9 kcal, a few sloppy spoonfuls add up over a day. The same conversion helps when you're working through recipe conversion from English-language books, sticking to a low-fat diet with strict daily limits, or doing fitness meal prep where the macros have to land on a target.

FAQ

Is a Brazilian "colher de sopa" the same as a US tablespoon? Close enough. Both sit around 15 mL, and Brazilian measuring spoons follow that standard, though everyday cutlery can vary.

Why doesn't 1 tablespoon of oil weigh 15 g like water? Oil's density is only about 0.92 g/mL. You're pouring the same 15 mL, but the mass works out lower, around 13 g.

Should I level or heap the spoon? Level it off with a knife if you want the gram conversion to mean anything. A heaped spoon can hold 30โ€“50% more, which quietly wrecks your macro tracking.
