Floor & Drain (Ebb & Flow) works differently: it floods the substrate and lets it drain, on a typical 15 min on / 30–45 min off cycle that repeats 4–6 times through the photoperiod. With DWC (Deep Water Culture) the roots stay submerged in an oxygenated reservoir, so the air pump runs all the time while the water pump only handles recirculation. Aeroponics mists the roots at 3–5 s on / 2–3 min off, which calls for a high-precision digital timer. Get the cycle wrong and the roots end up short on O₂ or nutrients.

Getting the pump cycle right matters a lot for commercial lettuce farms, where NFT dominates, and for indoor vertical farms that stack dozens of NFT channels. Why does NFT run 24/7? The film is only about 1 mm thick, so the moment you pause the flow the roots dry out and the solution starts losing dissolved O₂. Keeping it running holds both temperature and oxygenation steady.

Can I use a mechanical timer for aeroponics? No. Their smallest increment is usually 15 min, and aeroponics needs digital cycle timers that resolve down to seconds.

What if power fails in NFT or aeroponics? Aeroponic roots die within 20–60 min once the misting stops. NFT buys you a few hours, though throughput suffers. Either way, plan a UPS or battery backup for the pump.
