Average Menstrual Cycle
You count the menstrual cycle from the first day of bleeding up to the day before the next bleed begins. To average several recent cycles, just add them up and divide by how many you have: average = sum(cycles) / n. Textbooks like to quote 28 days, yet the World Health Organization treats anything between 24 and 38 days as normal in adults.
In a typical cycle, menstruation runs 3 to 7 days and ovulation lands around day 14 ± 3, all of it orchestrated by FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone. A handful of tracked cycles predicts the next one far better than a single month does, because stress, weight swings, travel, illness and contraceptives all tug on the length.
Applications
Think family planning, fertility awareness, spotting irregularities (oligomenorrhea, polymenorrhea, amenorrhea), keeping an eye on PCOS or endometriosis, and scheduling exams and contraceptive methods. Among the popular tracking apps are Flo, Clue, Femia and Natural Cycles (FDA-cleared as contraceptive). In Brazil, hygiene products are regulated by ANVISA. On the contraceptive side you have 21+7 pill regimens, hormonal and copper IUDs (5–10 years), implants and injectables.
FAQ
Is a 35-day cycle abnormal? No. Anything from 24 to 38 days falls within the normal range. If your cycles keep landing outside that window, it's worth seeing a gynecologist to rule out PCOS or thyroid issues.
How accurate is calendar-based fertility awareness? With perfect use it's roughly 76–88% effective. Adding basal temperature and cervical mucus tracking (the sympto-thermal approach) bumps that up. An app on its own isn't contraception unless it's been FDA-cleared.
Why did my cycle suddenly change? Plenty of things can shift cycle length for a while: stress, sharp weight loss or gain, intense exercise, a new medication (hormonal ones especially), crossing time zones, perimenopause, pregnancy or simply being unwell.
