Turbine thrust: F = ṁ·(V_e − V_0)
Jet thrust is Newton's third law at work: gas thrown out the back at high velocity pushes the engine forward with an equal and opposite force. On the test stand the static thrust is F = ṁ·V_e, mass flow rate times exhaust velocity. Once the aircraft is moving, the net thrust drops to F = ṁ·(V_e − V_0). A modern high-bypass turbofan splits the flow into two paths, F_total = ṁ_core·V_core + ṁ_fan·V_fan, and at cruise it is the fan that does most of the work. For a sense of scale, a Boeing 737 (CFM56) puts out roughly 110 kN per engine, a 747-8 (GEnx) about 300 kN, and a single Saturn V F-1 rocket engine some 6.77 MN, with five of them on the stage. Specific impulse, I_sp = F/(ṁ·g₀), expresses efficiency in seconds. Run the example: ṁ = 50 kg/s, V_e = 600 m/s, V_0 = 200 m/s gives F = 50·400 = 20 kN.
Applications
It shows up across commercial aviation (ICAO certification of CFM, GE, Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney engines), in aerospace (SpaceX Raptor at 2.3 MN, Merlin at 845 kN), in eVTOL design from the likes of Joby and Lilium, in military aviation where afterburners push thrust up 30–50%, in drone propulsion, and in rocket-equation work for orbital launch.
FAQ
Why do thrust ratings drop with altitude? The mass flow rate ṁ tracks air density, and density falls as you climb. Push less air through the core and you get less thrust. Airliners head up into the thinner air for efficiency, not for more thrust.
What does bypass ratio mean? It compares the mass of air going through the fan against the mass going through the core. High-bypass turbofans (BPR 8–12) run quieter and burn less fuel because they get their thrust by nudging a big mass of air rather than flinging a small one hard.
How does a rocket differ from a jet? A rocket brings its own oxidizer and keeps working in vacuum, while a jet engine breathes atmospheric air and quits at high altitude. The trade is that rockets reach a higher V_e but chew through propellant far faster.
