Target humidity by reptile and amphibian species

Relative humidity (RH) inside a terrarium is what governs shedding, hydration and respiratory health. Get it wrong and you see retained sheds, mouth rot, skin infections. Here are the targets I work from: corn snake (cobra-do-milho) 50–60%; leopard gecko 40–60% with a humid hide that sits at 70% or above; green iguana 70–80%; poison dart frogs (sapo-dardo) 90%+; semi-aquatic turtles (tartaruga-tigre-d'água) 70%+; bearded dragon (pogona) 30–40%; desert species (uromastyx, leopard tortoise) 20–30%. Use a digital hygrometer at the height the animal actually lives, since analog dials drift fast. Need it higher? Mist daily, use a bigger water dish, run a fogger on a timer, or switch to sphagnum moss substrate. Need it lower? Open up the screen top, drop the water bowls, add a basking lamp. The real goal is a humidity gradient across the enclosure: a humid hide at one end, a drier basking spot at the other, so the animal can pick its own spot for heat and moisture.

Applications

Reptile and amphibian keepers use it, so do herp specialty pet shops and zoological gardens and conservation centres dialing in enclosures for endangered species. Breeders lean on it to time brumation and oviposition, since in some species the exact RH is what triggers egg-laying. Vets reach for it too, adjusting husbandry to treat dysecdysis or a respiratory infection.

FAQ

What happens if humidity is too low? Retained sheds, often on the toes and tail tip where they cause necrosis, along with dehydration and trouble hatching eggs.

And if too high? Mold, scale rot, respiratory infection, bacterial blooms. Poor ventilation makes all of it worse.

How often should I mist? Tropical species 1–2× daily; desert species hardly ever. Let the hygrometer tell you, not a fixed schedule.

Are misting systems worth it? For dart frogs, chameleons and crested geckos that need several mistings a day, yes. A manual spray bottle covers simpler setups just fine.
