How much dry food does a cat eat per day
A healthy adult cat eats roughly 50–60 g of dry kibble per kg of body weight per day. For a typical 4 kg cat that comes out to about 200–240 g/day, ideally split into 2–3 meals. Kittens need around 50% more per kg since they're growing and burn more energy. Senior cats (7+ years) and neutered/spayed cats usually need a little less so they don't put on weight. Wet food is a different story: roughly 100–150 g per meal × 2 meals/day. Mixed feeding (dry + wet) is common, and there you just split the total daily caloric target between the two. Always read the kcal/100 g on the bag, because premium brands pack more energy per gram, so the daily amount drops.
Applications
People use it for feline nutrition planning, for obesity prevention (over 50% of indoor cats are overweight), to forecast the monthly bag budget, to compare the cost-per-day of different kibble brands, to calibrate automatic feeders, and to plan rations in catteries and shelters. Veterinarians lean on the same baseline when prescribing weight-loss or weight-gain diets.
FAQ
Why does my cat seem hungry even on the right amount? Cats that grew up grazing all day tend to beg out of habit rather than real hunger. Hold to the calculated ration for 2–3 weeks, then reassess body condition (you should be able to feel the ribs without seeing them).
Premium kibble, same grams? No. Premium brands carry more kcal per 100 g, so you usually feed 10–20% less by weight. Follow the brand's label for the cat's weight range.
Kitten vs adult portion? Up to 12 months, kittens need around 1.5× the adult per-kg ration, split into 3–4 smaller meals. Once they hit a year, move them to the adult formula and quantity.
