Cat Litter Quantity per Month

Estimates kilograms of cat litter consumed per month per adult cat.

โ€”

Monthly litter consumption per cat

A cat throws out roughly 50โ€“70 g of litter per day, and over a month that lands at 1.5โ€“2 kg per cat per month. So a typical 4 kg bag tends to last about 60 days for one cat, which works out to roughly 1 bag every 2 months. The most common type is clumping bentonite, where you scoop the wet clumps each day. That's handy, but the monthly waste runs higher. Silica gel works the other way: nothing gets scooped, you swap the whole tray every 2โ€“3 weeks, and its g/day rate is the lowest of the bunch. Plant-based granules like corn, pine and tofu fall in between and have the bonus of being biodegradable. With several cats it isn't a straight multiplication. Add about 30% per extra cat, because they're all using the same substrate.

Applications

A monthly forecast comes in handy for pet shop budgeting, where you're estimating how fast customers go through bags, as well as inventory planning for stores and online retailers, subscription delivery sizing at 1 versus 2 bags a month, household cost planning and multi-cat colony management in shelters and catteries. It also helps when comparing brands, since what you spend per month usually says more than the sticker price on a single bag.

FAQ

How long does a 4 kg bag last? Figure on 60 days for one cat. Two cats sharing a tray will get you to about 45 days, and three cats to around 35.

Which type is cheapest per month? Silica gel has a higher price per bag, but its daily use is so low that it often comes out ahead on the monthly bill. Clumping bentonite is cheaper by the kilo, except you go through more grams each day.

Why isn't 3 cats triple the consumption? Because they share the substrate. In practice use climbs by about 30% per extra cat rather than doubling. Two cats run around 1.3ร— a single cat, and three sit near 1.6ร—.
