Brazilian Standard Ceiling Height (Pé‑direito)
In Brazil, the “pé-direito” is the clear vertical gap between the finished floor and the underside of the slab or ceiling. The performance standard NBR 15575 pins the absolute minimum at h ≥ 2.40 m for habitable rooms, while most residential codes treat 2.60 m ≤ h ≤ 2.80 m as the comfortable range. Living volume works out to V = A × h, which is why a handful of centimetres can swing ventilation, lighting and thermal comfort.
Service rooms get more leeway. Bathrooms and kitchens accept h ≥ 2.30 m, laundry and circulation areas sit around 2.20 m, and mezzanines follow the same logic. Commercial mezzanines (sobrelojas) and showrooms usually ask for 3.00–3.50 m so there's room for signage, HVAC ducts and lighting tracks. Check the municipal “Código de Obras” too, since it can be stricter than the federal norm.
Applications
Architects lean on it when checking preliminary studies, engineers when they weigh slab thickness against clear height, appraisers when they describe a unit, and homeowners when a renovation is on the table (drop ceilings, attic conversions, layers of sound insulation). Industrial sheds and warehouses answer to their own logistics rules, like forklift mast clearance, but residential pé-direito always works out from these baselines.
FAQ
What is the absolute minimum allowed? Habitable rooms need 2.40 m under NBR 15575, kitchens and bathrooms 2.30 m, and circulation and mezzanines 2.20 m. Go below those and the project won't clear performance approval.
Does a drop ceiling (forro) count? Yes. You measure the clear height from the finished floor up to the underside of the lowest fixed element, so a forro de gesso eats into the usable pé-direito.
Can the city require more than NBR 15575? It can, and often does. Municipal building codes (Código de Obras) frequently set the minimum at 2.50 m or 2.60 m. Read the local rule before you lean on the federal one.
