Standard bathroom sizing in Brazil
A lavabo (powder room) with just a toilet and lavatory needs a minimum 1.50 m², with typical minimum dimensions around 0.90 × 1.70 m. Add a shower box for a full social bathroom and you're looking at 3–4 m², usually laid out as 1.50 × 2.20 m. A suite with a bathtub climbs to 4.5–6 m², since the tub by itself takes up roughly 0.70 × 1.70 m.
Accessible (PCD) layouts are stricter: NBR 9050 calls for a free turning circle of Ø 1.50 m and a footprint of at least 1.50 × 1.70 m. As for ventilation, natural openings have to reach 1/8 of the floor area in hot climate zones and 1/6 in cold ones. PVC sewage piping follows NBR 5688 for drainage.
Applications
Apartment floorplan reviews, residential renovations, building code compliance (Código de Obras municipal), real-estate listings, hotel and pousada planning, SUS units, and condominium common bathrooms.
FAQ
Can a lavabo be smaller than 1.50 m²? It depends on the municipal code, but once you drop below 1.20 m² you'll typically fail the Código de Obras and the prefeitura will reject the planta.
Does a bathroom always need a window? No. Interior bathrooms are fine as long as a mechanical exhaust runs continuously and the duct meets the NBR 16401-3 airflow.
Why is the shower box usually 0.90 × 0.90 m? That's the smallest size that lets an adult stand and turn without bumping the walls. Anything tighter feels cramped and tends to fail accessibility audits.
