CNH category upgrade (Brazil)
Moving up a CNH category (B→C→D→E) means waiting a set time at each step and putting in extra training. B→C: 1 year + 15h aulas + 5h estrada. For B→D it's 2 years of CNH B + 50h treinamento, and C→E asks for 1 year of CNH C + 10h treinamento. Costs run R$ 800-2500 depending on the category, on top of DETRAN fees of R$ 200-300.
Each category covers a different set of vehicles. A is for motorcycles, B for regular cars and light trucks ≤3.5t, C for trucks 3.5-12t, D for buses (≥8 passengers), and E for articulated and semi-trailer rigs ≥6t. The rules come from Lei 9.503/97 CTB + Lei 14.071/2020. If you want to drive a taxi or Uber on a B license, you'll need the professional certification (EAR - Exercício de Atividade Remunerada).

FAQ
Can I skip B→D? No. You either go through B→C→D in order or hold 2 anos B + EAR.
Is exam practical and theoretical? Both. There's a theory part and a practical exam on the category vehicle, with emergency procedures included.
How long does upgrade take? Count on 60-120 days from enrollment to issuance, depending on the CFC schedule and how backed up the DETRAN is.
