A Brazilian driver who racks up 20+ points within 12 months, or commits a serious infraction, gets the CNH suspended by the DETRAN (state traffic department) for whatever period the administrative process decides. To find the recovery date you compute recovery = suspension_start + suspension_months + reciclagem_course_days. The reciclagem (refresher course) is mandatory: 30 in-person hours at an accredited DETRAN center, and it has to be done before anyone hands the license back.

This all rests on Art. 261 of the Código de Trânsito Brasileiro (CTB — Law 9.503/1997), later updated by Law 14.071/2020, which in some cases doubled the point threshold from 20 to 40. The reciclagem stays entirely on paper: 30h of classroom instruction plus a written exam you have to pass with at least 70%. There is NO practical driving test. Hand in the course certificate and the original CNH is valid again.

FAQ

Does the first-time CNH (permissão para dirigir) require reciclagem if suspended? No. A suspension during that first year (the permission phase) does NOT trigger reciclagem. The driver has to start the whole CNH process over from scratch: medical exam, theoretical test, practical test.

Can I take the reciclagem course online? No. Resolução CONTRAN 723/2018 demands 30h of in-person instruction at a DETRAN-accredited center. The online version exists only for the periodic renewal of already-licensed drivers, not for recovering from a suspension.

What documents must be updated before reinstatement? You need a valid medical exam (psychotechnical and clinical), proof of residence, ID, and the original CNH document. Anything expired means renewal fees on top of filing the reciclagem certificate.
