Brazilian traffic fines: severity tiers, points and amounts (CTB)

The Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB — Lei 9.503/97, updated by Lei 14.071/2020) sorts every infraction into four severity tiers. Here are the base values: light: 3 points and R$ 88.38, medium: 4 points and R$ 130.16, serious: 5 points and R$ 195.23, and very serious: 7 points and R$ 293.47. For the worst behaviours, the very-serious tier can apply a multiplier of 60× to 180× on top of the base value.

Take driving under the influence (art. 165): it lands in the very-serious tier with a 10× multiplier, which adds up to 7 points and a fine of R$ 2,934.70, on top of an immediate CNH suspension. Those points sit on the driving record for 12 months and count toward the suspension threshold.
